The Clarion River is a tributary of the Allegheny River, approximately 110 miles long. Given the name by surveyor Daniel Stanard in 1817, he described the sound of the water as a distant clarion, a clear and shrill sound. Today, the river is used for fishing, canoeing, and other recreational activities, and runs through extensive wildlife and forest areas. The first bridge was a one lane covered bridge and after many versions the Route 322 Bridge was built. In 1985, the ground breaking for a new 875’ arch bridge took place and was dedicated to the memory of Frank J. Walls, on August 28, 1987. He was a
native son of Clarion and a soldier killed during the Vietnam War.
