The University


Clarion University is a high-achieving, nationally recognized, comprehensive university. It offers a personal and challenging academic experience, where the faculty and staff serve every student as an individual. Clarion is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Founded in 1867, Clarion is a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.

Clarion offers over 90 degree programs, 27 of which are nationally accredited, the most in the State System.

The university’s total enrollment is approximately 7,100, including students on the main campus at Clarion, Venango Campus in Oil City, West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, and other initiatives such as the online Virtual Campus.

In addition to the many academic offerings, Clarion is a partner with the community and region as a regional resource for cultural, athletic, and business development activities.

Clarion offers a variety of housing options, including four traditional residence halls, two student apartment suites, and student apartments at Reinhard Villages a short distance from the campus. The suites and villages offer private bedrooms and baths in addition to other amenities.


Clarion University’s lifestyle of learning is attractive to many people. The educational experience includes not only academics but also social and cultural growth. Personal interaction allows students to become familiar with diverse backgrounds and helps develop understanding and cooperation in community living.

Campus activities include Homecoming Weekend, coffeehouses, campus movies, rock concerts, intercollegiate and intramural athletics, music and drama performances by Clarion University students and staff members, clubs, Greek organizations, art exhibits, and special performances by noted orchestras, drama groups, and speakers. More than 130 clubs and organizations serve a wide range of student interests.

The University recreation center offers many opportunities for students, including a four-lane indoor track, three multisport courts, a climbing wall, and a weight room. Membership is available to the public.

Clarion recently opened a new Science and Technology Center designed for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification that is environmentally friendly and one of five such buildings at Clarion. Stressing an emphasis on student research, the new building has 40 laboratories, seven classrooms, and two seminar rooms.

Eagle Commons, a dining facility, opened in January 2009 and features a diverse menu that is available to both students and the community, including a Starbucks.

Majors and Degrees

Clarion University offers more than 90 degree programs, including the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), the Bachelor of Science (B.S.), the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (B.S.B.A.), the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.), the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.), and the Bachelor of Science in Education (B.S.Ed.).


Undergraduate majors in the College of Arts and Sciences include anthropology, art, biology, chemistry, communication studies, computer science, economics, English, environmental biology,environmental geosciences,

French, geology, history, industrial mathematics, information systems, liberal studies, mass media arts, journalism, mathematics, medical technology, molecular biology/biotechnology, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, sociology, sociology-psychology, Spanish, speech communication, and theater.

Undergraduate majors in the AACSB International accredited College of Business Administration include accounting, business economics, finance, industrial relations, international business, management, marketing, and real estate.

Undergraduate majors in the College of Education and Human Services include early childhood education, elementary education, music education, rehabilitative science, secondary education (with certification available in nine areas), special education, and speech pathology and audiology. Numerous minors, concentrations, and dual certificate programs are available to enhance the student’s academic major.

Academic Programs

Clarion University offers nationally competitive academic programs with hands-on professional preparation. Its philosophy of liberal education at Clarion allows students to become intellectually well rounded while specializing in their fields of study. The flexibility of the academic program also enables students to have dual majors. In most cases, students must complete 120 credits to earn a bachelor’s degree and 60 credits to earn an associate degree, but requirements vary according to the specific program.


Clarion also offers a robust online Virtual Campus,
Continuing Education, and a Small Business Development Center.
